Collections

Objects in the collections reflect the age of the village and its surrounding area. These go back to the Jurassic Age - parts of a dinosaur were found within the parish in the late 19th century. There are a number of fossils, as well as prehistoric worked flints and evidence of human habitation in the Neolithic period. There are some Roman remains.

The village was important in the medieval period, though objects from that period are few. Manuscripts from the 13th to 16th centuries have been lodged at the Oxfordshire History Centre, with copies kept at the Museum.

The largest part of the collection comes from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Objects reflect the rural industries of the past, especially agriculture, the wheelwright’s trade and the craft of the cobbler. There is also material relating to ironworking and the coming of the railway, which closed in the 1960s.
